Many like to argue that all the best kinds of art and entertainment are those which we have a visceral reaction to. It's the painting that makes us do a double take, or the joke that makes us gasp. While it may be true that it is not a requirement for everything that diverts us to be shocking in some way, it certainly helps to capture our attention. The medium of memes is well aware of this, and it's fair to say that it enjoys dabbling in the edgy and unexpected to make us more likely to react and share. They are not afraid of raising eyebrows and wrinkling noses if the wrong audience happens upon them, and there is a certain amount of respect to be had for that.
